President's Message

Travis

Holy #%@$^*! we did it! A collective sigh went out across the Tourmaline parking lot late Saturday June 14th. It seems PBSC had pulled it off again. This time the Tenth Annual Pacific Beach Summer Longboard Classic was a smash with surf in the three to four foot range, and more competitors than we've ever had. Nice job crew, you know who you are.

On behalf of the Pacific Beach Surf Club, we would like to thank all of our generous sponsors and the volunteers who've dedicated their time to making this happen. That of course will be the topic of discussion at our next meeting, (nice segway huh?) anyways, the next meeting for general membership will be Thursday, July 10th, at Round Table Pizza at 1221 Garnet Avenue in PB. 7:00 pm, 6:30 for Board members. Bring friends as we will be signing up new members all meeting.

Now Shut Up and Surf.

The club's tenth annual contest at tourmaline

By Richard Steadham

June 14, 2008, saw the club return to Tourmo for the 10th Annual Summer Longboard Classic, which also saw the return of classic conditions for this contest: gloomy and windy—all day. The exception was of the last couple of heats at the end and the awards ceremony following those. Talk about bad luck, just the day before (Friday) and the day after (Sunday) it was sunny and glassy for the most part, for both those days. Go figure.

JudgesEven though the weather was less than ideal, you couldn't tell it on the faces—or in the attitudes—of all who were there, both competing and watching. Though wind was an ever-present factor during all the heats, there was still some good wave energy in the water, which provided the competitors with enough juice to pull off some amazing rides for the judges to score.

Around tent city there was plenty of action too with displays from Masi Surfboards, Mushroom Matrix, John Slavin Photograpy and our charity beneficiary,

Wildcoast. As in years past, there was a tent for buying raffle tickets, one for buying food, one for buying contest t-shirts and other merchandise, and one for new member and contest registrations.

Thanks to all our dedicated volunteers who gave up a chunk of their day managing all these tents. A big thanks goes out to our judges again this year too, sitting there all day in lousy weather, yet scoring each rider's performace with accuracy and fairness.

For everyone who came out to support the club by being there and being a part, thanks. For those who competed, a big thanks! Below are those who made it to the finals.

Andre Niemeyer from My Local Lineup took photos of the contest that you can see here.

Eric from My Local Lineup even has some video coverage of the event that you can see here, which is all pretty cool except for the part where I'm on camera during one segment rattling on about this and that.
