Mar 10: New Exhibit, “The Wave” at CenterLight Gallery of La Jolla

A new exhibit featuring three artists begins with an opening reception at CenterLight Gallery of La Jolla on Saturday March 10th, 2007 from six to nine pm.

The exhibit is entitled: “THE WAVE”. “This show brings together three outstanding artists.”, says Maria Repke, the owner of CenterLight Gallery.

The exhibit brings together famous photographer Warren Bolster’s adventurous surf photography, Maria Repke’s and Lorrie Blackard’s oil paintings. Repke said, “This exhibit will certainly please the enormous community of ocean goers here in Southern California – whether they be young or old surfers, water waders or sightseers. They will all be able to enjoy this show. “

The fine paintings and photography shown in the exhibit range from calming seascape paintings to large exciting wave paintings to spectacular and sublime wave and surf photography. Repke explained, “All of the pieces in the exhibit are tied together by, of course, water – the element that is so much a part of all of us and Mother Earth. Through the greater enjoyment and gratitude of the ocean and water in general we will be moved to care for it better. This is the underlying intent for and celebration of the exhibit.”

CenterLight Gallery of La Jolla features important and current works by established, well-known, and emerging artists. The gallery is located at 5490 La Jolla Blvd., Ste A., La Jolla, CA 92037. 858-456-8188 (located in the corner of Seahaus, parking underground on La Jolla Blvd.)

Mar 22: Paul Strauch, the "Gentleman Surfer" at USD for One Evening

In the early 1960s, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku assembled some of the best young Hawaiian surfers to promote his surfwear and other products. Team members included Paul Strauch, Jr., Joey Cabell, Fred Hemmings, and Butch van Artsdalen, each of whom went on to become well known watermen and surfers.

On 22 March 2007, the USD Surf Culture and History class is proud to present our first 2007 "Aloha Series" Lecturer, Mr. Paul Strauch, whose talk is titled "Lessons I learned from the Duke." All are invited. Admission is free.
The lecture will start at 7:00 p.m, and take place at Manchester Auditorium (Room 111) in Manchester Hall. For parking, ask attendants at either entrance off Linda Vista Road and they will direct you.

Paul, a native Hawaiian from Honolulu, has been described by Bary Kanaaupuni as "...the best surfer in the world." (For those of you familiar with the North Shore, that's "BK," and he attended Mission Bay High School here in Pacific Beach!) According to surf journalist Matt Warshaw, author of The Enclyclopedia of Surfing (2003), Strauch is credited as the first surfer to execute bottom turns in bigger waves, and is the creator of the "cheater five" or "stretch five" stance, sometimes called the "Strauch crouch."

Paul finished second in the juniors division of the 1958 Makaha International, and then went on to win it in 1959. He won the '63 Peru International, placed second in the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational, and third in te 1965 World Surfing Championships.

Today, Paul is the President of the Hawaiian Surf Club, which meets weekly at San Onofre. He has been known throughout his life as the "gentleman surfer," and remains today a true ambassador of the aloha spirit.

Mar 23: Josh Hall Sponsored Event

Hey guys, many of you may not know but I am no longer in the business of importing and selling wines…(I know, its been a while)…But what I have done in the last year is dedicate my life to surfing, and more specifically, the board building aspect of surfing. So, here is an event that I have planned along with two other companies as a fundraiser for Wildcoast. The event is slated for Friday March 23rd, 200,7 at Aubergine downtown. Please look at the following website for all of the detailed information about the event: www.thevanguardsite.com

Just some info: the band named the Growlers will be joining us from up north, background sounds by my good friend Mikey Beats, and other pieces of fun stuff will be present. There will be also a silent auction of two surfboards, one a 5’9” Rocket fish shaped by myself and on it the works of Shay; the talented artist of the evening. There will be a special board auction of a rare Skosh model, built by both Skip Frye and myself.

So come on down and join us for the evening. $10 donation at the door goes to Wildcoast and all the proceeds from the event as well. On hand there will be things to purchase, t-shirts, prints, etc…. come on down and see ya there!

Josh

P.S. Please spread the news throughout your respective parties! The more people there are at the event, the more money gets put to a good use here in San Diego! Thanks!

P.S.S. Please look at the website, for there will be a redcarpet and photos of your party posted on it after the event! Cheers!
